Love’s Labour
Performance, 15 minutes
The artwork explores the existence of love in the presence of violence. Can salaried work, that exerts force both on the body and the mind, affect relationships, both those of romantic love and those with our friends? The piece deals with class and the effect that hidden physical work has had on the body, family life and love through generations. It is inspired by Édouard Louis autobiographical novels about the complex expressions of societal violence. How are our life patterns affected by growing up in homes with violence and destructive relationships?
Love’s Labour starts from existential and physical loneliness. The artwork confronts contemporary and continuous developments of using robots to cure loneliness. Love’s Labour examines the differences and similarities between robot love and human love. The performance was a part of the research project Work a Work that was carried out at the Royal Institute of Art between 2017 and 2019 within the framework of Anoushirvani’s research project “Kärlekens arbete (i våldets närvaro)” [The work of love (in the presence of violence)] and the research group Work a Work. The project was supported by the Swedish Research Council.

Verket undersöker kärlekens existens i våldets närvaro. Kan ett lönearbete som gör våld på kropp och psyke påverka relationer, både den romantiska kärleken och den till våra vänner? Verket behandlar klassamhällets och det osynliggjorda kroppsarbetets påverkan på kroppen, familjelivet och kärleken i generationer. Det är inspirerat av Édouard Louis självbiografiska berättelser om samhällsvåldets komplexa yttringar. Hur påverkas våra livsmönster när vi växer upp i hem med våld och destruktiva relationer?
